Overview

Fire statistics show that over 13,000 fires in 2008 were started by children under the age of 18, more than half of which were caused by matches, lighters or lighted candles.

The Fire Fighters Charity and the Fire Kills Campaign have joined forces to create this annual, high profile awareness week, listed in teachers’ diaries across England, to tackle this issue and to help drive these numbers down.

With support from the Department of Children, Schools and Families, the objective is to teach children key messages that they can take home and relay to their families to help prevent fires, which can have devastating and tragic consequences.

This year, the campaign is aimed at Year 2 children and suggested educational activities will follow the Key Stage 1 curriculum.
